Osijek convincingly defeated Rudeš 6-1 in Velika Gorica and maintained a perfect record after two rounds. Federico Bessone is pleased with the result, but even more so with the way his team continues to grow from match to match.
The Bijelo-plavi settled the question of the winner already in the first half. They went into the break with a 4-0 lead, thanks to two goals from Armando Leon and two from Nail Omerović. Omerović completed his hat-trick in the second half, while Arnel Jakupović also got his name on the scoresheet with an impressive finish. Rudeš could only reduce the deficit before the final whistle.
However, the start of the match did not look quite so straightforward.
This match was very important for us after a good start to the season last weekend. We knew that Rudeš would come out high and aggressive. We did not start well and did not feel comfortable during that period. But it is important that the team can withstand such moments without conceding a goal. After the first goal, we took control and dominated until the end – said Bessone.
Although Osijek scored four times in the opening 45 minutes, the coach rated the second half more highly.
It is not easy to score four goals in one half, but I am more satisfied with our performance in the second half. We had greater control and created more chances. In the first half, we were extremely efficient. Overall, we played a very good match and I am happy for the whole team.
Bessone: This is what we wanted
Two matches, six points and a goal difference of 8:1. Osijek have made an attacking and convincing start to the season.
We have to continue at this pace. This is the path we envisioned before the start of the season and we knew where we wanted to be. Now our first match at Opus Arena awaits us. I am looking forward to returning in front of our fans and hopefully collecting more points.
Bessone is not talking about perfection, but he is pleased with the character the team has shown in the opening two rounds.
It is not easy to score six goals away from home. Once again, we were solid, and I am especially pleased that we won both matches and showed the personality of this team.
Omerović already on four goals
Nail Omerović has continued his excellent start to the season. With his hat-trick against Rudeš, he reached four goals and moved to the top of the HNL scoring charts.
After a good match against Gorica, we once again showed our quality. We did not start the best, but our finishing gave us a big advantage. At half-time, despite the 4-0 lead, the coach demanded that we be better and more secure. We could not afford to relax, but had to finish the match in the right way – said Omerović.
The difference compared to last season is particularly evident in the finishing so far.
Last season, there were matches in which we had a “million” chances, but the ball simply did not want to go into the net. Now we are being rewarded for what we do on the pitch. When you start taking your chances, your confidence grows as well. Then one goal leads to another. It is a great feeling.
Leon took his chance
Armando Leon was given a place in the starting XI and responded with two goals. The first Mexican in Osijek's history thus made the most of Bessone's trust in the best possible way.
I am very happy for the team. This is not a coincidence; once again, we prepared well for the match. We can see that we are working well and that we can compete with any opponent while playing our own way. Now we turn our attention to Lokomotiva – said Leon.
