The 2009-born centre-back, at the club since 2016, has been training with the first team and stays with the White and Blues, with an option to extend.

Young centre-back Mateo Sabo, born on 23 April 2009, has signed a new contract with NK Osijek running until summer 2028, with an option for a further extension.

He joined the club in 2016 and has since come through every age group of our youth academy. The promising 17-year-old has been training with the first team for some time and has impressed the coaching staff, earning a place on the White and Blues’ bench for our last two league fixtures, against Rudeš at Opus Arena and Lokomotiva at Maksimir. He has also starred for Croatia at U17 level.

More and more chances for homegrown players

Backing players from our own academy and the local area is part of the club’s philosophy and long-term approach. This season, more youngsters from the U19 and even the U17 sides have been handed their chance with the first team in the SuperSport HNL than ever before. Mateo is very much one of the players the club is counting on when it comes to homegrown talent.

Osijek is my club and I’m happy that I can already prove myself in the first team. The dressing room is full of young players and the coach clearly believes in us youngsters, which only gives us extra motivation. I believe in myself and of course I’d like to make my HNL debut soon. That’s my next challenge, and there will be plenty more goals to chase over the course of my career, said Sabo.
