Zekic congratulated Rijeka’s players, never questioning their deserving the win. Nevertheless, it is sad that NK Osijek were defeated during the closing moments of the game, just shy of a tie with the current champion. It would’ve been a satisfying outcome, considering the circumstances, which were in the home team’s favor.

These circumstances involve a particular second yellow card, more precisely a red card for Maric, leaving Osijek one man short, so it was only natural for Rijeka to put constant pressure on the away team and that Malenica’s surrender was eagerly awaited by the locals. It’s a pity that, by minute 88, the loss was certain, irrespective of our hoping that a 0-0 score will be the outcome…

A weak defense

Things took a turn in a mere minute. Barac complained about being struck on the pitch, ref. Jovic sent him to the bench because of his needing medical attention, but the worst thing was Mudradzija’s being alone at Rijeka’s gates. The away team had, thus, found themselves in a situation where there were only 7 of them, which was ultimately detrimental as Rijeka bombarded Osijek’s goal in order to score.

Puljic almost managed to score, after Gorgon’s shot and Malenica’s not-so-quick reaction during the situation, making Osijek saddened, for they faltered when many thought they wouldn’t, no matter the difference in numbers.

A defeat without significant consequences

Rijeka capitalized greatly, being more driven and dangerous, creating solid opportunities, undoubtedly. Osijek tried some things during their counterattacks and in free-kicks, but the best situation starred Lopa in the second half, when he almost missed. Rijeka’s substitutions brought prosperity, scoring the first goal against NK Osijek this season. Zekic’s chosen was fighting hard and their hard work wasn’t missing, but luck was on Rijeka’s side.

It was an acceptable defeat, but an uncomfortable one for sure. Due to the fact that it was a loss against the champions and their nigh-rabid fans that cheered them on, we can safely say that the rivalry between the 2 teams is rising
