Alejandro Cantero Joins the White and Blues!

Alejandro Cantero, born on June 8, 2000 in Madrid, has signed a 2+1 contract with the White and Blues. His playing career makes for interesting reading, having gained valuable experience and established himself on the big stage during his time in Spain. A former Spain U19 international, he began by briefly taking us through his career so far.

I started as a boy at Real Madrid and spent several years there. After that, I went to Valladolid, where I stayed for two seasons, while my professional career began at Levante, before I moved to Tenerife. More recently, I spent six months with Jagiellonia in Poland, before returning to Spain and spending half a year at Huesca.

Cantero has played in several different positions at his previous clubs and says it is something he has simply become accustomed to.

My primary position is on the left wing, but I can also play on the right, out wide. I have no problem playing as a centre-forward either, I’ve done all of that before. I’m ready and accustomed to playing several different attacking roles within the team. I have no problem with that, I’ve already played in those positions and feel comfortable there.

Ready for New Challenges

His 29 appearances in La Liga, one of Europe’s strongest leagues, are certainly worthy of respect.

I’m very proud to have those numbers in my career! I’ve trained hard from the very beginning, ever since I started playing football, because I wanted to achieve something significant in my career. I want to keep progressing, play as much as possible and, in doing so, continue improving. Yes, I’ve played against the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico and the other big clubs in Spain, and I think I’m ready for what awaits me here.

We asked Alex, as everyone calls him, where he felt he produced his best football.

I think I played my best football at Levante, where I settled in really well. I was also close to that level at Tenerife. In Poland, I had to adapt to some new experiences, as it was my first time outside my home country, and that helped me gain a new perspective on both football and life in general. It took me a little time to settle in, but I also took some good things from that experience. I think I learned a lot there as well.

He arrives in Osijek highly motivated and determined to show the supporters the best version of himself.

I haven’t played since my last league match for Huesca, but I trained hard right up until my arrival in Osijek. Physically, I feel good and I hope to be ready as soon as possible for everything the coach expects from me here. I’m fortunate that there is a break in the league after the next match, so I’ll have more than enough time to catch up with the rest of the team.

“The Match Against Dinamo Was Incredible”

He was full of praise for what he saw in the White and Blues’ most recent match against Dinamo.

I watched my new Club while travelling to Osijek. It was an incredible match! The team played very well and we just have to keep going like that. What I saw on Saturday was really positive and encouraging. I want to use my experience to help my teammates, who I can see are very young. But I don’t think age is that important in football. When you’re on the pitch, you’re focused and you know what you have to do, regardless of how much experience you have. Having young players in the squad is always good because they bring positive things. I think I can fit in well and show why I played in La Liga.

Sporting Director Kenneth Zandvliet explained that a player of exactly this profile was what the team needed.

Alex Cantero is a versatile player who can play in any position across the attacking line. His versatility says a lot about his football intelligence and technical ability, aspects that are very important to our style of play. In addition to providing assists, he also brings goalscoring ability and gives us the experience we need.
